A prisoner on remand at Dodds Prison has been shot during an escape attempt.

Starcom Network News understands that the prisoner who was on remand for murder was being escorted on the prison compound by a female prison officer when he pulled away from her and refused orders to stop and surrender.

The male prisoner is said to have run towards the fence but only reached the inner perimeter before being shot.

He was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

The injury is not said to be life threatening
