St. Vincent’s Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has arrived in Barbados for head scans to determine the extent of his injuries after he was struck during protests yesterday in his country’s capital Kingstown.
Sources here tell Starcom Netwoork News that due to the lack of certain medical equipment in St. Vincent that’s needed to carry out certain tests, Dr. Gonsalves was flown to Barbados and there’s the possibility he might remain here for treatment and to recuperate.
Speaking to Starcom Network News from Antigua, Chairman of CARICOM, Gaston Browne has condemned the physical assault on Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.
Political scientist at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, Cynthia Barrow-Giles tells Starcom Network News such incidents are uncommon in the political culture of the Eastern Caribbean.
But she also believes the general protests are indicative of the political temperature in St. Vincent.
The protests were sparked by the government’s moves towards mandatory covid-19 vaccinations and testing.
