Chamber opposes price control

The President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Anthony Brancker, says he is against the implementation of price controls and also denies indicating any support for such a move.

Mr. Brancker reached out to Starcom News today to refute what he felt was incorrect representation of his views on price controls in another section of the media.

An article quoted Mr. Brancker as not ruling out price controls if needed to stem the rise in the cost of living.

Prime Minister Mottley had said government was not ruling out price controls and if necessary was prepared to act.

The Chamber President believes the market should be allowed to operate freely without state interference.

Mr. Brancker insists that the price increases are a result of rising costs overseas.

Earlier this month, Minister of Entrepreneurship Kerrie Symmonds said he had instructed the Department of Commerce to conduct a thorough review of recent price movements in Barbados.

Starcom Network News understands that matter will be discussed at tomorrow’s cabinet meeting.
