NUPW meeting called

The full membership of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), will this week be called on to help resolve a bitter leadership battle in this country’s largest public sector union.

A special general conference has been called for Thursday  to vote on a matter dubbed by the acting general secretary as a potential constitutional crisis.

It follows the submission of a resolution to seeking to install NUPW President Akanni McDowall as General Secretary, a post in which the deputy General Secretary Wayne Waldrond is now acting.

With a big turnout expected Mr. Waldrond tells Starcom Network News the venue for the meeting has been switched from the NUPW auditorium at Dalkeith St. Michael to the larger Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center.

Mr. Waldrond says the matter at the core of the meeting presents a constitutional dilemma for the union.

Mr. Waldrond expanded on why he thinks it constitutes a constitutional crisis.
