West coast off limits

Some of the many cruise ships that were allowed to remain anchored off Barbados when the covid-19 pandemic halted global travel have done significant damage to some of this country’s reefs.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey, said at a news conference today that most of Barbados’ reefs are in bad condition.

And the anchors from the vessels that remained offshore here contributed to the problem, especially off the west coast.

As a result, cruise ships are now banned from anchoring off the West Coast of Barbados and will only be able to anchor in Carlisle Bay under exceptional circumstances.
