DLP Contenders Want “Fair and Transparent” Internal Election

Democratic Labour Party internal elections are heating up with challengers demanding to see the party’s membership list and names of the election officers.

They say they want to ensure the poll is fair and transparent.

In a letter addressed to the General Secretary of the party, Dr. David Estwick, Ryan Walters and Richard Sealy, they said that as they embark upon their respective campaigns, they seek to have an assurance that the election process will be carried out in keeping with the required minimum standard of fairness and transparency.

The challengers are seeking to have access to the membership list of the party, to have equal opportunity to reach out to their fellow comrades and to seek their support.

They also want to know the names of election staff to ensure these people are not involved in the campaign for any person contesting the election and finally to be allowed to provide scrutinizers at every stage of the electoral process.

Efforts to get a response from party officials or the challengers themselves were unsuccessful.

Political Scientist, Dr. George Belle, believes the upcoming Democratic Labor Party internal elections will come down to whether party members desire a fresh leader, or a more experienced candidate.

Dr. Belle believes that Dr. David Estwick’s bid for the DLP presidency could particular impact on the outcome.
