Few if any poultry farmers will be part of a new prices compact if the soon to expire deal is extended.
The second six-month edition of the government brokered agreement with local producers, distributors and retailers commenced at the start of February this year capping the mark-ups on more than 40 supermarket items.
The business sector recently indicated that some supermarkets may be unable to continue their participation.
And President of the Egg and Poultry Producers Association, Stephen Layne, tells Starcom Network News that chicken farmers get such slim profits from their sales that many were unable to take part last time and it will be even more difficult to do so now.
According to Mr. Layne it’s the retailers not farmers who benefit from poultry sales.
