Barbados’ Attorney General Dale Marshall is concerned about the level of crime in the region and describes the murder rate as frightening.
He was speaking at the start of a two day symposium on crime prevention put on by the University of the West Indies Centre for Criminal Justice and Security and Carisecure.
The attorney disclosed that there is significant number of firearm and murder cases pending in the Barbados courts and notes that the perpetrators are generally very young men as he emphasises the importance of crime prevention.
Mr. Marshall notes that Caribbean countries dominate the list of the top ten countries in the world with the highest murder rates.
Mr. Marshall also highlighted the brutal nature of some crimes pointing out that St. Lucia had to seek outside help.
And he worries the crime trend could spread.
