The Barbados Bar Association says it has commenced disciplinary action against convicted Attorneys Vonda Pile and Cheraine Parris while stressing that it does not condone lawyers convicted of theft of client funds or found guilty of professional misconduct.
The Bar sets out its position on the matter in a statement issued by its President, Kaye Williams, following public outcry over attorney Vonda Pile returning to practice and representing clients in the courts after serving a three-year prison sentence for stealing a client’s money.
Ms. Williams said that while they cannot comment on the nature of the application, she can confirm that its legal team has hearings set before the Disciplinary Committee on May 16th for Cheraine Parris and May 25th for Vonda Pile.
But she complains that the process for sanctioning convicted attorneys is too lengthy and points out that the Bar has been pushing for a swifter process.
She adds that the BBA cannot be held responsible for clients who continue to hire people who are convicted of offences relating to clients’ funds.
Meantime the Bar Association has also submitted recommendations for reform of the Legal Profession Action with regards to automatic disbarment or very swift sanctions.
