Lawsuits are set to be filed as a suspended teacher returns to work and another waits for word on his status.
Alwyn Babb, a physical education teacher at the Lester Vaughn Secondary School and Pedro Shepherd, a teacher at Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary, were suspended on half pay after becoming candidates in last year’s general elections.
The Supreme Court recently ruled that it’s unconstitutional to bar public officers from taking part in politics and Mr. Shepherd tells Starcom Network News he returned to teaching on Monday.
He is now awaiting an official response from the Ministry of Education on the recommendation from President Dame Sandra Mason that he be reinstated.
Mr. Shepherd indicated to Starcom Network News he’s still planning to go to court to, in his words, “seek relief”.
Meantime, Alwyn Babb says his case remains in limbo and he has had no word except a terse response from the ministry to his attorney.
Mr. Babb says he’ll be taking the matter to court.
