A man who officials say appeared to have mental challenges was rescued from a 2nd floor ledge at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
The incident that was captured on video, occurred between 5 pm and 6PM yesterday, Friday.
Hospital officials tell Starcom Network News the man presented himself in the vicinity of the Accident and Emergency Department bleeding from his right hand.
They say security officers approached to render assistance, but he quickly got into the driver seat of a car and drove to the main entrance where he parked, alighted from the car, and entered the building through the exit door. They add that security officers pursued him to help and to safeguard patients, visitors and staff of the hospital.
However, the man proceeded to ward B7.
At this point, a doctor and orderlies joined the security officers and tried to restrain him.
Officials say he was speaking incoherently and exhibited the behavioural traits of an individual with mental challenges.
They say his strength and ability to escape saw him running ahead of the officers and dashing onto the balcony, where he climbed out, traversed the fire rails from Ward B7 to B6.
According to the officials, during this time the QEH security officers used careful persuasion to secure his safe return to the balcony.
They stated that eventually he reached to the B6 balcony, where he was rescued, taken inside the building, and attended to by QEH medical personnel.
They note that no one was injured during the incident.
Hospital management have issued a statement commending what they say was the swift and very careful action of those involved who ensured that the man was rescued and given urgent attention.
The statement adds that the Police Service is investigating the incident and that all necessary post incident reviews are being done.
