Cabinet today formally agreed that November 30th will remain as Independence Day this year and going forward and there will be a national consultation on the best way to mark the transition to a republic.
This confirms a decision announced late last night by Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams, following a major public backlash against the plan to rename Independence Day, Barbados National Day.
Mr. Abrahams, the Minister responsible for coordinating national events, announced today’s cabinet decision while noting Barbadians’ strong attachment to Independence Day and again insisting they are a government that listens.
