Teachers’ unions and education officials are expected to meet over the next week to try to agree a plan for the resumption of face to face classes.
The ministry of education had pushed back the date for the phased resumption from late January to late February due to the Omicron-driven spike in covid-19 cases.
But, teachers have indicated doubt about whether even that February 21st deadline can be met.
Yesterday, the Chief Medical Officer said the country needs to learn to live with covid and stated government’s desire for face to classes to resume as soon as possible.
President of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union, Mary-Anne Redman, tells Starcom Network News, a meeting on the matter was scheduled for yesterday but has been pushed back.
Ms. Redman repeated her concerns about the covid spike while pointing out that the actual number of daily cases might be several times higher than official figures indicate.
General Secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers, Herbert Gittens, noted the statements from the chief medical officer but says he will wait to hear more from education and health officials when they meet, which he expects to be probably sometime next week.
