Booster shots as covid-19 vaccines wane

Barbados health authorities have commenced administering covid-19 booster shots to some categories of people as they rush to use up all the vaccine does before they expire and as immunity from earlier doses wanes.

In fact, officials admit that the declining effectiveness of some of the vaccines administered earlier might be leading to break through cases.

This was disclosed by joint coordinator of the National Vaccination Program, Dr. Elizabeth Ferdinand, during a media briefing this morning.

And with a segment of the population still vaccine-hesitant, leading to the vaccine drive falling behind schedule, health authorities also want to ensure all the doses are used up before they expire.

The roll-out of the booster shots has begun but at this stage is being limited to frontline health care workers and groups that are considered to be particularly vulnerable.
