- Government’s Labour Department has demanded that a local company withdraw a memo threatening to fire any employee that refuses to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The Chief Labour Officer has written the Managing Director of Hill Milling Company and Lionel C. Hill Supermarkets warning that it’s up to an employee to determine whether they want to be vaccinated or not.
The letter states that workers are not to be treated unfairly nor discriminated against by an employer if he or she chooses not to take a COVID-19 vaccine.
It stresses that it is not mandatory for an employee to take a COVID-19 vaccine and warns that under the provisions of the Employment (Prevention of Discrimination) Act, an employee of the company can bring a claim for discrimination in employment, arising from the content of the memo that was issued.
The Labour Department letter concludes by advising that the memo be withdrawn immediately and that Hill Milling and Lionel C. Hill Supermarkets complies with the stance of the Social Partnership in not mandating covid-19 vaccinations.
