Early Warning Systems: Bridging the Accessibility Gap

In a region where early warnings can mean the difference between life and death, entire communities are being left out. Over several months, Shantelle Legall-Gibson in Barbados and Seigonie Mohammed in Trinidad and Tobago set out to investigate how people with disabilities are or are not included in the Caribbean’s early warning systems. They examined national data, interviewed expert officials, and spoke directly with the people most affected: the deaf, the blind, and the advocates fighting for inclusion. What they found was more than a gap. It was a silence. Because for many across both islands, the danger isn’t just the hazards itself. It’s being unseen. It’s being uncounted. And it’s being unprotected until it’s too late.
