Elderly woman killed in freak accident

One woman has been killed and another injured in what police said was a freak accident this afternoon at Berinda Cox Fish Market.

Police said they responded to a report of an accident involving a motor car and two pedestrians around 3:50 pm on the compound of the Oistins Fish Market, Oistins, Christ Church.

A motor car driven by a 54-year-old male was parked on the northern side of the carpark.

The driver was about to drive off when (for some reason still under investigation) the vehicle accelerated across the carpark striking another vehicle before mounting the sidewalk and collided with two elderly females who were sitting under a wooden structure where the fish vendors ply their trade.

One of the women was pinned onto a wooden post. She was transported by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with severe injuries, compound fractures to both feet and injuries to her lower torso. She died whilst at the QEH.

The second woman complained of injuries to her right foot and was taken away by ambulance to QEH. Police are carrying out on-scene investigations. The deceased victim has been identified as Rita Hunte 74 years of Upper Carters Gap, Christ Church. The second injured party is Dorothy Hall 63years of Sayer Court, Christ Church. The driver of the motor car did not complain of any injuries.
