CHAPS Restaurants CEO receives death threats

Owners of the CHAPS restaurant group that closed yesterday putting about 150 people out of work is looking for new investors to try to save the company and some of those jobs.

This as CEO of the operation, Joanne Pooler reports she’s been receiving death threats and hate messages via social media following the announcement.

The three well-known upscale restaurants CinCin by the Sea, Primo Bar and Bistro and Hugo Barbados closed their doors with management citing a heavy increase in government taxes and reduced customer spend as the major reasons for the decision.

Government officials argued that the real cause was a dispute between the investors and met with the restaurant chain’s management about the closure.

This morning Ms. Pooler told Starcom Network News that she has been subjected to death threats and abuse since the announcement and stresses that she’s just an employee of the company like anyone else and was following instructions.

Meanwhile, the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, via its CEO Senator Rudy Grant has issued a statement expressing concern over the closure of the restaurant chain and the loss of jobs as a result.  He spoke of the need for all restaurants to get the same tax concessions offered other players in the tourism and hospitality sector.
