The Barbados Government has introduced a new national policy to govern the naming and renaming of public buildings, roads and spaces.
Under the Memorialization Project in the Prime Minister’s Office, such naming will now be treated as a national honor, with all proposals reviewed by the National Honors and Decorations Advisory Council.
The policy applies to all government-owned public spaces and sets clear guidelines, including public consultation and restrictions on offensive, political or commercial names.
Program Advisor Rodney Grant says the move is significant in shaping Barbados’ post-Republic identity.
Pointing to honor walls already established in The Pine community, Mr. Grant says the project will be rolled out island wide and is encouraging Barbadians across all communities to get involved.
