A 46-year-old unemployed man, previously convicted of manslaughter and recently released from Dodds Prison, is back at the St. Philip facility, this time charged with causing serious bodily harm to his mother.
Ryan Charles Ricardo Harewood, of 2nd Avenue, Knights Land, was transferred from the Psychiatric Hospital to Dodds Prison after appearing in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court today. He pleaded with Magistrate Ian Weekes to be granted bail but was denied.
Harewood told the court he had contacted two senior attorneys to assist with his bail application, but neither appeared in court. Station Sergeant Williams objected to his release, citing his mental health history, the likelihood of reoffending, and concerns for public safety.
Harewood, who was not required to plead to the indictable charge, was remanded until August 28. Magistrate Weekes assured him that arrangements would be made to facilitate any legal or medical needs while in custody.
Starcom Network News exclusively reported on the alleged attack, sharing a harrowing account from his mother, Angela Harewood, who spoke from her hospital bed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital last week.
Harewood was previously charged with the murder of Remie Best in Goodland, St. Michael, on November 26, 2003. He later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 13 years in prison by Justice Chandler on December 11, 2007.
