Privatization Pressure Mounts

A university finance expert sees government under increasing pressure to privatize state agencies and suggests outsourcing services such as garbage collection.

University of the West Indies, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Professor of Finance, Dr. Justin Robinson, was commenting on government’s estimates of revenue and expenditure currently being discussed in the House of Assembly.

Government has budgeted for a deficit of 844 million dollars for the next financial year which will have to be made up by borrowing, while resumed debt service payments have placed additional pressure on its cash flow.

Professor Robinson believes it’s vital that government controls it’s spending in order to meet targets and maintain credibility with investors and international lending agencies.

And this may require some tough decisions in relation to state agencies.

But he doesn’t think government has any choice and suggests garbage collection is one of the services that could be outsourced while creating a new cadre of entrepreneurs.
