Electricity Rate Hike Decision Further Delayed But Some Increase Likely

The Barbados Light and Power Company is likely to be granted some level of rate increase though not the full amount requested, and Barbadians will have to wait at least another three weeks to hear what that hike will be.

This was announced by Chairman of the Fair Trading Commission rate hearing, Dr. Donley Carrington, during a media conference today.

The power company has been seeking an 11.9 percent rate increase and last September the FTC granted them an increase of fifty percent of the amount requested, pending the outcome of a rate hearing.

Today Dr. Carrington said that the FTC has approved certain aspects of BL&P’s rate hearing submission but rejected several others and the company is required to resubmit in relation to those issues.

The FTC should announce a decision in about a month.
