Christ Church Man recovering After Almost Three-Hour Rescue Operation

A Christ Church man is recovering after an almost three-hour operation to rescue him from a deep well near St. David’s, Christ Church.

Police have not released the man’s name. Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Rodney Inniss tells Starcom Network News that he told officers he plunged into the well after trying to escape two men who attacked and tried to rob him yesterday evening.

“Sometime after 6 pm, we received a call at our Operations Control Room; a male, we later learned was a forty-six-year-old male. He apparently called and reported that he had fallen into an open well in the area of Egerton, in Christ Church that’s an area about 400 meters away from the Blackman Gullop school.  It wasn’t a shrubbery area, a really overgrown vegetation. What was reported was that two men assaulted him, attempted to rob him, and in his bid to escape he ran through the vegetation and for some reason fell into the open well. He had his cell phone and he called and reported it to police. We obviously responded along with ambulance service and the fire service and having been on the scene we were able to communicate with him during that time.”

Mr. Inniss says a number of people assisted with the rescue effort. “The rescue was attempted by the fire service, along with the hands of many other persons who are here to assist to extract him from that well. We were finally able to do that sometime after 9 pm last night. He was immediately handed over to ambulance personnel who rushed him over to the hospital for medical attention. We were told that he left the hospital to seek alternative medical attention.”

Fire Service Station Officer, Tremelle Perch, who led the rescue spoke about the challenges involved in the operation.

“We got on the radio system to communicate with police as well as my team to raise the person from the bottom of the well. It usually takes some time because we’re very careful in what we do because safety is our number one priority. The well was approximately 35 to 40 feet and it was very narrow on the inside and the road itself it was narrow. Our mobility was very limited.
