Poultry Problem

A shortage of broiler eggs out of the US has disrupted the operations of some Barbadian poultry farmers, forcing one local fast food restaurant chain to close its branches for two days.

However, a spokesman for local poultry producers insists there’s no general shortage of chicken.

Chicken Barn had posted a notice on social media alerting customers to the temporary closure of its outlets. The branches have since reopened.

Peter Hynam, Managing Director of Chicken Barn Limited, tells Starcom Network news the problems chicken farmers were encountering have badly affected his business.

President of the Barbados Egg and Poultry Producers Association, Stephen Layne, tells Starcom Network News,  that the problem arose from a shortage in the supply of eggs imported from the US that are used to produce broilers for slaughter.

And he notes some farmers were not as badly affected as others and the sector was able to mobilise to ensure Chicken Barn was supplied.

He stressed there’s no shortage of layer eggs for supermarket shelves.
