Hinkson defends GIS performance

Home Affairs Minister Edmund Hinkson has defended the performance of the Government Industrial School following scathing criticism of the institution by Dr. Leroy McClean on his Facebook blog.

Among other things, Dr. McClean alleged that there were inadequate rehabilitative programs at the two facilities where juvenile offenders and troubled teens are housed.

Mr. Hinkson tells Starcom Network News while he concedes there is always room for improvement, progress is being made, especially given the difficult social and family backgrounds of the teenagers they are dealing with.

Meantime, Principal of the school, Ervin Leacock identified mental health issues, learning disabilities and difficult social and family backgrounds as critical factors in the behavioral issues of the juveniles.
