Humphrey: Biodegradable food packaging ‘not harmful’

Government is reviewing the results of tests done by the  Barbados National Standards Institution which found that the biodegradable food packaging being imported contains high levels of fluorinated chemicals.

However, Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey stresses there is no health risk and says the packaging will not be banned.

Mr. Humphrey says Barbados is following closely a model in the US, where Washington state is allowing those alternatives to remain until 2022, and then they will be banned if other eco-friendly alternatives are identified.

He was speaking to the media this morning following a Stakeholder Sensitisation Workshop on  Establishing a Conservation Trust Fund in Barbados.

He adds that they are considering having an industrial compost facility established soon.
