General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union Senator Toni Moore says the union is giving the Board of Directors of the Barbados Water Authority a chance to mend fractured relations with the management and staff of the state agency and for now will not be pursuing the workers’ demand that the chairman of the board, Leondene Worrell be removed.

Senator Moore was speaking to journalists this morning after briefing BWA staff on the outcome of almost ten-hour long talks yesterday at which the BWA board rescinded a decision to fire the Director of Human Resources Jacqueline Belgrave.

The staff at the BWA had threatened a strike for today unless Ms. Belgrave was reinstated.

Senator Moore says Ms. Belgrave’s firing was the final straw in a series of incidents and a way of doing things that severely strained relations between the board and the management and staff at the BWA.

Senator Moore says the union is not accepting the argument that the circumstances necessitated a certain approach.

Meantime, Minister of Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams, in a statement after chairing yesterday’s talks between the BWA Board, management and members of the Barbados Workers Union admitted that relations were strained between the board and management as a result of the approach being taken by the board.

He promised a change in approach and an effort to repair the damaged relations.
