Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Wilfred Abrahams, is serving notice to the company Innotech that the Barbados Water Authority and the government will not be held to ransom, warning them of his intention to re-work their contracts and assuring BWA customers that their interests will be looked after.
Mr. Abrahams was in a no-nonsense mood in an interview with Starcom Network News following a threat by Innotech to lock BWA workers out of their Pine, St. Michael headquarters over lease payments, followed by the company’s removal of some of the community tanks that supply areas that have been suffering from chronic water outages.
Mr. Abrahams says the entire situation is disgraceful, describes a series of contracts Innotech signed with the Barbados Water Authority as unconscionable and vows to have them renegotiated. He says the government is determined to – quote- clean up the mess – unquote.
He assures residents in areas supplied by the Innotech water tanks that new tanks are being put in place and tells Innotech which has been earning income from renting tanks to the BWA that if they remove their tanks they can keep them.
The minister also warns that the government plans to clean up those contracts by any legal means available even going to court if it has to.
