The Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs confirms that Dr. DeLisle Worrell has been relieved of his duties as Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados.

A statement from the ministry this afternoon effectively states that Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Chris Sinckler, has revoked  Dr. Worrell’s appointment.

It also says that the Bank’s Board of Directors, at a specially convened meeting today, agreed that Deputy Governor Cleviston Haynes, be appointed to act as Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados and that the current Financial Controller of the Bank, Michael Carrington, be appointed to the post of Acting Deputy Governor.

The statement says both appointments have been approved by the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, and will take effect from today.

Dr. Worrell was officially fired by email yesterday afternoon. Well placed sources tell Starcom Network News that shortly after the Barbados Court of Appeal dismissed Dr. Worrell’s application for yet another injunction to block any move to fire him, he received an email from the office of the finance minister informing him that his appointment had been revoked.

Dr. Worrell was not at the bank today and a meeting of Central Bank staff was scheduled for this afternoon.

Dr. Worrell had been fighting to keep his job for roughly the past two weeks after reportedly being told to resign or be fired. In recent times he had spoken out against the practice of printing money to finance the government deficit and pay government salaries.
